Questa è una storia intima sull’amore di una coppia di anziani con sindrome di Down nel villaggio sociale di Svetlana, che ospita persone con vari disturbi mentali e fisici, nonché i loro mentori e volontari. Non è un asilo o una clinica. Ogni residente è apprezzato come persona e tutti lavorano per il bene comune. Minya e Tatyana si sono incontrate in questo villaggio e si sono innamorate nel 2015. Hanno più di 50 anni. Ho visto questa coppia conoscersi e vedere quanto sono stati felici da allora.

Si prendono cura l’uno dell’altro, trascorrono il loro tempo libero insieme e si preoccupano per la salute dell’altro. Amano ogni minuto del loro tempo insieme. L’amore per loro non è qualcosa di ordinario, ma un raro colpo di fortuna. Minya e Tatyana lavorano come fornai e aiutano anche a cucinare e pulire. Agiscono anche in opere teatrali e dipingono. Molti credono che le persone con sindrome di Down siano incapaci di amare, ma non è vero. L’amore non conosce limiti. Tatyana è morta quest’anno a causa del COVID.

Mary Gelman è una fotografa membro della VII Photo Agency, con sede a San Pietroburgo, Russia.

Nel 2016 si diploma alla School of Modern Photography Docdocdoc (San Pietroburgo) e partecipa a vari workshop internazionali e locali. Lavora come fotoreporter e insegnante. La parte più importante della sua vita professionale sono i progetti personali. Combina nei progetti un forte approccio personale con pratiche documentarie e concettuali. Mary si concentra su uno studio delle questioni di genere e corpo, confine e identità, discriminazione e rapporto umano con l’ambiente.

Mary è stata una vincitrice di diversi concorsi. Ha ricevuto il Leica Oskar Barnack Award, Pictures of the Year, Portraits – Hellerau Photography Award, Istanbul Photo Awards, Andrei Stenin International Photo Contest. Lavora per il New York Times, il Washington Post, l’UNICEF e molti altri.
